What if I'm not really a soccer mom? Okay, so your kid plays hockey, or does karate, or dances ballet. But, surprise! You might be a soccer mom anyway. A soccer mom is more than an actual mother of soccer-playing kids; she's a demographic consulted by pollsters and a stereotype perpetuated by the media. We chose the term “soccer mom” because it's part of our culture's common language, a quick and easy shorthand for a woman who is focused on raising a family, may or may not work out of the home, and usually, but not always, lives in suburbia. If you fit that description, you qualify as a soccer mom, too! We hope you'll consider joining us in making a statement to promote peace. What if I hate being called a soccer mom? We'll admit it, we're not too fond of the term either. But we think the slogan “soccer moms for peace”™ turns the assumptions about soccer moms upside-down, and shows that so-called soccer moms are concerned with the world outside the minivan. What if I support our troops? We believe that supporting our troops and expressing our desire for peace are not mutually exclusive. We encourage you to support our military in any way you see fit - adopting a serviceperson, displaying a “we support our troops” flag. The ultimate way to support our troops is to bring them home, and that won't happen unless we make it known to our leaders that we prefer peaceful solutions to world conflict. Isn't it too late for peace statements? Now, more than ever, it's time to speak for peace. It's easy to advocate peace in peaceful times; it's harder in times of conflict. We cannot become complacent and passive. We must work for a quick end to armed conflict, and beyond that, invest in nonviolent, humanitarian solutions for a troubled world. What else can I do? There are many excellent organizations working to promote peace on a global scale. Some of them are featured in our links section. We encourage you explore these links and consider getting involved with organizations in your community. |
